Effects of Rumensin in Lactating Cow Diets with Differing Starch Levels
نویسندگان
چکیده
Kaiser and Shaver (2006) and Bucholtz (2006) reported starch concentrations in diets fed to high-producing dairy herds ranged from 25 to 30 % on a dry matter (DM) basis. Increased corn prices have heightened the interest in feeding reducedstarch diets. Results from short-term dairy cattle feeding trials suggest that reducedstarch diets formulated by partially replacing corn grain with high-fiber, low-starch byproduct feedstuffs may be economically feasible (Shaver, 2010).

Balancing Carbohydrate Sources for Dairy Cows during a Period of High Corn Prices
Carbohydrates, NDF and NFC, comprise about 70% of DM in diets for lactating cows. While diets containing 21% forage-NDF are common, depending on forage availability, price and quality, diets can be found within a normal range of 16% 24% forage-NDF (DM basis). Maximum NFC guidelines are positively related to forage-NDF content in diets for lactating cows. Starch is the major component of...
متن کاملImproving starch digestibility in dairy cows: Opportunities with low-starch diets
The optimum starch content of diets fed to lactating cows is not well defined, but 24% to 26% starch (DM basis) has been suggested (Staples, 2007). Kaiser and Shaver (2006) and Bucholtz (2006), from surveys of high producing (>13,650 kg RHA) dairy farms in Wisconsin (n = 6) and Michigan (n = 18), respectively, reported starch concentrations of diets fed to lactating cow groups ranging from 25% ...

متن کاملMilk Production and Composition, and Intake of Holstein Lactating Cows Fed Diets with Partial Substitution of Soybean Meal with Flaked Field Pea
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a partial substitution of soybean meal with field pea (Pisum sativum) in Holstein lactating dairy cow diets on dry matter intake, milk yield and composition, blood metabolites, rumen ammonia-N concentration and pH. Eighteen lactating Holstein cows were randomly assigned into three groups based on parity, days in milk, and mil...
متن کاملCoping with High Corn Prices: Low Starch Diets and Lactation Performance by Dairy Cows
Lactating dairy cow diets with more than 24% starch (DM basis) are common, but recent high corn prices have fueled a desire to feed lower-starch diets. The potential for using digestible neutral detergent fiber or pectin from byproduct feeds or sugars to partially replace starch from corn grain in diets fed to lactating dairy cows was reviewed. Potential modifying effects of corn silage, starch...
